The checker gets the centre point of the full postcode from postcodes.io.
Read current warning areas
An hourly scheduled job gets active flood alerts and warnings and their area polygons from the Environment Agency.
Check the boundary
The postcode point is tested against every active warning polygon, with the most severe matching warning shown first.
Common questions
Flood alert and warning questions
Does this show long-term flood risk?
No. It shows warnings currently issued by the Environment Agency. A place can have long-term risk even when no warning is in force.
Does it cover all of the UK?
No. This Environment Agency warning feed covers England. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have separate official flood-warning services.
Does it show surface-water or flash flooding?
Not completely. Localised surface-water flooding can happen away from a mapped warning area or before a warning is issued.
How often is the information updated?
The Environment Agency flood-warning API is updated every 15 minutes. GB Maps refreshes its local warning cache once each hour.
Why might a postcode near a boundary get a different result?
The checker uses the postcode centre point. Flood-warning boundaries can cross streets and postcodes, so always read the official warning and follow local advice.
