Place postcodes on UK and NHS maps
Use the postcode controls to place dots, marker boxes, radial circles and travel starting points on supported UK and NHS maps. Check that the location is within the map’s actual coverage before building your analysis.
Start with the right coverage
Open the UK or NHS map you need, such as an ICB, Trusts, ICS or PCN map. UK postcode positioning is available on supported variants, including maps with a different page layout or inset. A search does not add places or boundaries outside that map’s coverage. Use another map when your required locations are not represented.
Use a full postcode for a location
Enter a full UK postcode where possible and check the resulting position. The top postcode/place search locates a place; it does not add a territory, dot or marker by itself. Use the specific tool below to create the item you need. Northern Ireland uses BT postcodes where covered; this does not promise Republic of Ireland Eircode lookup.
Position radial circles
In Radial Circles, select the circle set, enter its postcode and use Find. Alternatively select Place centre on map and click the centre. Repositioning affects the selected set; use + only when you want another set. Set Number and Interval for the distance rings. Advanced import can place several sets from a postcode table. Ring distance is straight-line distance, not drive time.
Place marker boxes or import dots
For Marker Boxes, open Import from postcodes, enter matching Postcodes and Marker text rows, then choose Import markers. Advanced import adds per-row styles. To move an existing marker manually, select it, tick Place on map and click the new location. For dots or shapes, open Create Dots and use its postcode list or Advanced import. Keep postcodes, names and styles in matching rows, then inspect the results and any unmatched locations.
Check the starting point before calculating
In Distance/Time, find the postcode or position the starting flag on the map. Check its location, then calculate the drive time or distance. Moving a starting point is not the same as recalculating its existing travel area. Use the travel controls to calculate a new result after changing the start. The trial limits and travel allowance still apply.
Correct an older misplaced item
Existing saved items retain their saved positions. If an older circle was misplaced, select its set and re-enter the postcode or use Place centre on map. For an existing marker, select it and use Place on map, or ask the assistant to move that named marker to a postcode. Do not add a duplicate just to move it. For a travel area, correct the starting point and recalculate. Previously misplaced imported dots should be reimported from the original data; inspect the result and save a separate copy first if you want to keep the old version.
Ask the assistant to use the existing item
For example: “On this ICB map, move my existing depot marker to YO18 7TG and put the 20-mile circles at the same postcode. Keep my territories.” State which existing item to update. The assistant uses the supported map tools and can ask for clarification; check the resulting position before relying on coverage. Colour postcodes tests polygon centres, not every address inside an outline.
