Speak a request and let the assistant work

Tap the microphone, describe the result and pause. Ordinary supported edits can run automatically, with Undo if you change your mind.

  1. Choose the microphone

Open Map assistant and choose the microphone beside its question box. On a phone you can also choose Speak in the bottom bar. Allow microphone access when the browser asks. Recording starts only after you choose the microphone; the animated assistant icon does not mean it is listening.

  2. Say the result like you would ask a colleague

For example: “Colour the northern half of Great Britain red, the southern half blue and all of Ireland green. Keep my title and key.” Include place names, quantities and what to keep. The current map type limits which boundaries can be coloured. You do not need to explain which buttons to press.

  3. Pause to send

After a brief pause the recording stops, is transcribed into words and the question is sent automatically. You can choose the square Stop button instead. The animated working indicator means the assistant is processing your request. A recording can last up to one minute. If it misheard a name, correct it in your next message.

  4. Automatic edits and jobs needing review

Routine reversible map edits can run without pressing Ask or Make these changes again. Check the result and use Undo this job if needed. A request needing clarification waits for your answer. File-based jobs and actions requiring confirmation show their plan first; saving, exports and replacing or removing work are not promised to run without review. Account changes and purchases always remain your choice.

  5. Cancel or close

Cancel discards the recording and keeps your typed words. Closing the assistant stops microphone access. Closing it does not undo edits already applied. Use the map’s Undo for completed changes.

  6. If the microphone is unavailable

Use a current browser on the secure GBMaps website and allow microphone access in its site settings. Check that the device has a working microphone and another app is not holding it. If the button says temporarily unavailable, try again later or type the request. Typing and the illustrated handbook remain available.
