# How to colour a postcode map from a spreadsheet Official GBMaps guide for the classic map maker. VectorMaps has a different interface. Source: https://www.gbmaps.com/mcs/map-help.php?topic=spreadsheet-recipe Updated: 2026-09-29 Use Import Excel when your spreadsheet lists postcode areas, districts or sectors beside territory names. Matching polygons receive the territory colours and the map key is built for you. For numerical sales or population figures, use Additional Data or Heat Maps instead. The written instructions below describe the current controls; this is a guide, not a video transcript. ## 1. Prepare a clean table Use one row per postcode polygon with its territory name beside it. Remove headings from the copied selection. Check that the postcode level matches the map and that the names are consistent. Investigate unexpected extra key entries or blank areas before changing the design. The key should represent the intended groups.
